The university has developed more than 40 stable research programs in shipbuilding, mechanics, computer science, materials science & engineering, information engineering, civil engineering, management, biotechnology and so on. Its researches are characterized with the feature of national defense and it possesses great research capacity in ship designing & building, turbine engineering,, shipping automation & controlling, enterprise ERP, welding skills & materials, project structural analysis and some other fields. It takes a leading position in the research of sericulture and some related biotechnologies in the nation. In the recent 5 years, the school got 148.3 million yuan for its scientific researches, 28.5 million yuan in 2001, 33.57 million yuan in 2002, and 42.03 million yuan in 2003 respectively. And also in the 5 years, it finished 36 state scientific research projects, and now it gets another 18 state projects in research. Since the National Ninth Five-Year Plan, it has won two national second prizes, two national third prizes, and 90 provincial/ministerial in Sci-tech progress; it has published over 5,000 scientific papers. In 2001, it takes the 118th and the 144th position in the entries of SCI and CAJGED respectively among the 1075 higher schools in the nation. In 2002, it rises to the 85th, the 126th and the 154th in the entries of EI, ISTP and CADJGED. And in the same year, it takes the eleventh in awarded achievements, the fourteenth in academic papers, and the sixteenth in scientific research funds among the universities in the province. 　　The university takes an active part in international academic exchanges. It has been conducting long-term cooperative scientific research projects with institutes in Russia, Ukrain, and India. It links with universities in France and Australia and has opened up channels for joint efforts in running schools of undergraduates and postgraduates. IBI classes have been jointly operated with American education institutions for a long time. Training classes have been collaboratively conducted with some specialized software companies abroad.
